What we do
A broken garage door spring is the most common reason a door won't open. When a spring snaps you'll usually hear a loud bang, and the door becomes too heavy for the opener to lift. All American Garage Door replaces torsion and extension springs across the Kansas City metro, usually on the first visit, with emergency service 24/7.
- Torsion spring replacement sized to your door's weight
- High-cycle torsion springs with 5-, 7-, 10-year and lifetime warranties
- Both springs replaced on two-spring doors so they wear evenly
- Extension spring conversion to safer torsion systems
- New cables, drums and bearings checked while we're there
- Balance test and opener force adjustment after every job
Signs you need this
- A loud bang from the garage, then the door won't lift
- Door opens a few inches and stops
- A visible gap in the spring on the bar above the door
- Opener strains, hums or reverses
- Door slams down or won't stay halfway open

What a broken torsion spring looks like
Look at the spring on the metal bar just above the top of the door. A good spring is one tight, solid coil. A broken one has a gap of a few inches where it snapped, like the ones in these photos from Kansas City jobs.
If you see a gap, don't try to open the door by hand or with the opener. The door is now carrying its full weight with nothing to balance it, and the cables can slip off the drums. Call us and we'll replace it, usually the same day.

Residential spring repair FAQ
How do I know if my garage door spring is broken?
You'll usually hear a loud bang from the garage. Afterward the door won't lift, opens only a few inches, or the opener strains and stops. On a torsion system you'll often see a gap in the spring on the bar above the door.
Stop using the opener and call us. Running it with a broken spring can damage the opener.
What should I do if my garage door spring breaks?
Leave the door where it is, stop pressing the opener, and keep people and pets away from it. Don't try to lift the door by hand: without spring tension it can weigh 150 to 300 pounds. Call (816) 301-5209. Emergency service is available 24/7.
Can I replace a garage door spring myself?
We don't recommend it. Torsion springs store enough energy to cause serious injury, and winding them takes the right bars and the right spring size for your door's weight.
Should I replace both springs if only one broke?
On a two-spring door, yes in most cases. Both springs have the same number of cycles on them, so the second one usually fails soon after the first.
How long do garage door springs last?
A standard torsion spring is rated for about 10,000 cycles, and every time the door goes up or down counts as one cycle. Open and close it twice a day (4 cycles) and the spring lasts roughly 7 years. Open and close it four or five times a day (8 to 10 cycles) and it's closer to 3. High-cycle springs last longer and come with longer warranties: 5, 7, 10 years or lifetime.
What warranty do you give on garage door springs?
Extension springs usually carry a 3-year warranty. Torsion springs start at a 3-year warranty, and high-cycle torsion springs are available with 5-year, 7-year, 10-year and lifetime warranties. The higher the cycle rating, the longer the coverage. We'll help you pick the right spring for how often you use your door.
