The short answer

What we do

A broken or loose lift cable is the most common reason a garage door hangs crooked in the opening. The cables carry the door's weight under spring tension, so when one snaps or comes off its drum, one side drops. All American Garage Door replaces garage door cables across the Kansas City metro, usually on the first visit, with emergency service 24/7.

  • Both lift cables replaced so they wear evenly
  • Drums reset and cables wound evenly on each side
  • Door put back in the track and squared in the opening
  • Bottom brackets checked and replaced if rusted or bent
  • Spring tension checked and balanced
  • Opener force and safety reverse test after every job

Signs you need this

  • Door hanging crooked, one side lower than the other
  • A cable dangling loose beside the track
  • Cable unwound or bunched up on the drum at the top corner
  • Frayed or rusty strands near the bottom bracket
  • Door jammed or pushed out of the track

What to look for

What a broken garage door cable looks like

The clearest sign is a door hanging crooked: one side down, the other side up. You may also see a cable dangling loose next to the track or unwound from the drum at the top corner.

If your door looks like these, leave it where it is. Don't run the opener or try to lift it by hand. The door is now held up on one side only, and it can jam harder in the track or drop. Call us and we'll replace both cables, reset the drums and put the door back in its track.

Questions

Residential cable repair FAQ

Why is my garage door hanging crooked?

Almost always a broken or loose lift cable. Each side of the door hangs on a cable wound around a drum at the top. When one cable snaps or slips off its drum, that side drops and the door hangs at an angle. Stop using the door and the opener and call us.

Can I open my garage door with a broken cable?

Don't. With one cable gone, the door is held up on one side only. Running the opener or lifting it by hand can jam it harder in the track, bend sections or let it drop. Leave it where it is and call (816) 301-5209. Emergency service is available 24/7.

Can a frayed garage door cable be repaired?

No. A frayed or snapped lift cable has to be replaced, not spliced. Cables carry the full weight of the door under spring tension, so leave a frayed cable alone and call us.

Should both garage door cables be replaced at the same time?

Yes. Both cables have the same age and wear, so if one has snapped or frayed, the other usually isn't far behind. Replacing both keeps the door lifting evenly.

What causes garage door cables to break?

Age and rust are the most common causes, especially at the bottom bracket where moisture collects. A broken spring, a door that jumped the track, or a car bumping the door can also snap a cable or knock it off its drum.
