After hail or wind damages your garage door, first check whether it still opens and closes safely, then photograph the damage with the date before anything is repaired, and contact your homeowners insurance company. Small dents are cosmetic, but cracked panels, a bent track or a door that won't close should be inspected by a garage door technician.
Check safety first
- Does the door open and close evenly without binding?
- Are any panels cracked, buckled or pushed in?
- Are the tracks straight and the rollers still in them?
- Did the storm knock out power? Use the manual release only if the door is fully closed.
Document it for insurance
Take wide and close-up photos of every dent and crack, inside and out, plus the date of the storm. Many insurers ask for a written estimate; we provide free written estimates that list what's damaged and what it takes to fix it.
Repair or replace?
One or two damaged sections can sometimes be replaced if matching sections are still made for your door. Widespread denting, or damage on an older or uninsulated door, usually makes replacement the better value.
Choosing a tougher door
Thicker steel and insulated doors with a steel back resist dents better than thin single-layer doors. Wood-look and textured finishes also hide small dings better than smooth, dark panels.
