Garage door safety checklist

By All American Garage Door, Blue Springs, MO · Updated

Quick answer

Test your garage door's safety features once a month: run the auto-reverse test by closing the door on a flat 2x4 laid on the floor (it should reverse), wave an object through the photo-eye beam as the door closes (it should reverse), and check that the door stays put when stopped halfway. Keep remotes away from children, and never try to adjust springs or cables yourself.

Monthly tests

  1. Auto-reverse: lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path and close the door. It should reverse when it touches the board.
  2. Photo-eyes: start closing the door and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and reverse.
  3. Balance: with the door closed, pull the emergency release, lift the door halfway by hand and let go. It should stay roughly in place. If it drops or shoots up, the springs need adjusting.
  4. Look and listen: check for frayed cables, loose brackets, rusted springs and grinding noises.

If a test fails, stop using the opener and call (816) 301-5209.

Rules for kids

  • Keep remotes out of reach and mount the wall button at least five feet high
  • Never run under a closing door
  • Keep fingers away from section joints, hinges and springs

Openers and the UL 325 standard

Openers built since the early 1990s are required to have safety reversal and photo-eye sensors. If your opener has no sensors near the floor, it's time to replace it.

Leave springs and cables to a pro

Springs and cables are under enough tension to cause serious injury. A yearly tune-up checks all of this for you.
