R-value measures how well a garage door resists heat flow; higher numbers insulate better. An insulated door is worth it in Kansas City if your garage is attached, heated, used as a workspace, or has a bedroom above it. Polyurethane insulation is foamed into the door and generally reaches higher R-values and a stiffer door than polystyrene panels of the same thickness.
Polyurethane vs. polystyrene
- Polyurethane is injected and bonds to the steel. It insulates better for its thickness and makes the door stronger and quieter.
- Polystyrene is rigid foam board fitted into the door. It's a step up from no insulation at a lower price.
When insulation pays off
- Attached garages that share a wall with the house
- Rooms above the garage
- Heated garages, workshops and home gyms
- Garages where you keep a second fridge or freezer
Don't forget the seals
An insulated door with a worn bottom seal still lets in cold air, water and pests. New bottom seals and perimeter weather stripping are a quick fix we can do on any door.
Insulation also adds strength
Insulated doors with a steel back are more rigid, quieter, and resist dents better than single-layer doors.
