## Learning Center
- [Torsion vs. extension garage door springs](https://www.allamericandoorkc.com/learn/torsion-vs-extension-springs): Torsion springs sit on a metal bar above the garage door and twist to lift it. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on each side and stretch to lift it. Torsion systems lift more smoothly, put less strain on the door and opener, and are the standard on most newer homes. Extension springs are common on older homes, and both store enough energy to cause serious injury if handled without the right tools.
- [Garage door cable came off: what to do](https://www.allamericandoorkc.com/learn/garage-door-cable-came-off): If a garage door cable has come off or snapped, stop using the door and the opener, keep people and cars clear, and call a garage door technician. The cables carry the door's weight under spring tension, so a door with a loose or broken cable can hang crooked, jam, or drop suddenly. Don't try to rewind the cable or force the door.
- [Why won't my garage door close?](https://www.allamericandoorkc.com/learn/garage-door-wont-close): A garage door that won't close or reverses before it reaches the floor is usually caused by the safety sensors near the floor being blocked, dirty or misaligned. Wipe both sensor lenses, clear anything in the path, and make sure both sensor lights are steady. If it still won't close, the cause is likely the opener's settings, a track problem or a broken spring, which a technician should check.
- [Hail and storm damage to your garage door](https://www.allamericandoorkc.com/learn/hail-storm-damage-garage-door): After hail or wind damages your garage door, first check whether it still opens and closes safely, then photograph the damage with the date before anything is repaired, and contact your homeowners insurance company. Small dents are cosmetic, but cracked panels, a bent track or a door that won't close should be inspected by a garage door technician.
- [Garage door safety checklist](https://www.allamericandoorkc.com/learn/garage-door-safety-checklist): Test your garage door's safety features once a month: run the auto-reverse test by closing the door on a flat 2x4 laid on the floor (it should reverse), wave an object through the photo-eye beam as the door closes (it should reverse), and check that the door stays put when stopped halfway. Keep remotes away from children, and never try to adjust springs or cables yourself.
- [Should I repair or replace my garage door?](https://www.allamericandoorkc.com/learn/repair-or-replace-garage-door): Repair your garage door if the problem is a spring, cable, roller, opener or one damaged section and the rest of the door is sound. Replace it if several panels are dented, cracked or rusted, the door is uninsulated under a living space, or repairs keep adding up. A good garage door company should tell you honestly which makes more sense.
- [How to choose a garage door opener](https://www.allamericandoorkc.com/learn/how-to-choose-a-garage-door-opener): Choose a belt-drive opener if there's a bedroom or living space next to or above the garage, because it's the quietest. A chain drive costs less and suits detached garages. A wall-mount (jackshaft) opener frees up the ceiling and works well with high ceilings. Add battery backup if you need to get out during power outages, and Wi-Fi if you want to open or check the door from your phone.
- [Garage door insulation and R-value](https://www.allamericandoorkc.com/learn/garage-door-insulation-r-value): R-value measures how well a garage door resists heat flow; higher numbers insulate better. An insulated door is worth it in Kansas City if your garage is attached, heated, used as a workspace, or has a bedroom above it. Polyurethane insulation is foamed into the door and generally reaches higher R-values and a stiffer door than polystyrene panels of the same thickness.

## Frequently asked questions

**How do I know if my garage door spring is broken?**
You'll usually hear a loud bang from the garage. Afterward the door won't lift, opens only a few inches, or the opener strains and stops. On a torsion system you'll often see a gap in the spring on the bar above the door.Stop using the opener and call us. Running it with a broken spring can damage the opener.

**What should I do if my garage door spring breaks?**
Leave the door where it is, stop pressing the opener, and keep people and pets away from it. Don't try to lift the door by hand: without spring tension it can weigh 150 to 300 pounds. Call (816) 301-5209. Emergency service is available 24/7.

**Can I replace a garage door spring myself?**
We don't recommend it. Torsion springs store enough energy to cause serious injury, and winding them takes the right bars and the right spring size for your door's weight.

**Should I replace both springs if only one broke?**
On a two-spring door, yes in most cases. Both springs have the same number of cycles on them, so the second one usually fails soon after the first.

**How long do garage door springs last?**
A standard torsion spring is rated for about 10,000 cycles, and every time the door goes up or down counts as one cycle. Open and close it twice a day (4 cycles) and the spring lasts roughly 7 years. Open and close it four or five times a day (8 to 10 cycles) and it's closer to 3. High-cycle springs last longer and come with longer warranties: 5, 7, 10 years or lifetime.

**Can a frayed garage door cable be repaired?**
No. A frayed or snapped lift cable has to be replaced, not spliced. Cables carry the full weight of the door under spring tension, so leave a frayed cable alone and call us.

**Do you offer emergency service?**
Yes, 24/7. Call (816) 301-5209 any time, including nights, weekends and holidays. Regular office hours are Monday to Friday 7 AM to 6 PM and Saturday 9 AM to 3 PM.

**How much does garage door repair cost?**
It depends on what failed. A spring replacement, a cable job and an opener repair are each priced differently, and the size and weight of your door matter. We give you a written price before any work starts, with no upsell, and for emergencies we give you a price range on the phone.

**Why is my garage door hanging crooked?**
Almost always a broken or loose lift cable. Each side of the door hangs on a cable wound around a drum at the top. When one cable snaps or slips off its drum, that side drops and the door hangs at an angle. Stop using the door and the opener and call us.

**Can I open my garage door with a broken cable?**
Don't. With one cable gone, the door is held up on one side only. Running the opener or lifting it by hand can jam it harder in the track, bend sections or let it drop. Leave it where it is and call (816) 301-5209. Emergency service is available 24/7.

**Should both garage door cables be replaced at the same time?**
Yes. Both cables have the same age and wear, so if one has snapped or frayed, the other usually isn't far behind. Replacing both keeps the door lifting evenly.

**What causes garage door cables to break?**
Age and rust are the most common causes, especially at the bottom bracket where moisture collects. A broken spring, a door that jumped the track, or a car bumping the door can also snap a cable or knock it off its drum.

**How long does it take to install a new garage door?**
Most single and double doors are installed in one visit of about four to six hours, including removal of the old door. Custom doors take a few weeks to arrive from the factory.

**What does R-value mean on a garage door?**
R-value measures how well the door resists heat flow. Higher numbers insulate better. It matters most if your garage is heated, attached, or has a room above it.

**Which garage door brands do you carry?**
We install Amarr, Haas, Delden and Doorlink doors, and LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie openers.

**Belt or chain drive opener?**
Belt drives are much quieter, which matters with a bedroom above the garage. Chain drives cost a bit less and are fine for detached garages.

**Should I repair or replace my garage door?**
Repair it if the problem is a spring, cable, roller or opener and the panels are in good shape. Consider replacing it if several panels are dented or rusted, the door is uninsulated under a living space, or repairs keep adding up. We'll tell you honestly which makes more sense.

**Can I replace one section of my garage door instead of the whole door?**
Sometimes. If matching sections are still made for your door's brand, model and color, a damaged section can be replaced. If not, or if several sections are damaged, replacing the door is usually the better value.

**Can my garage door be painted?**
Many steel garage doors can be painted with exterior paint after cleaning and priming. Check the manufacturer's instructions first, because some finishes have specific requirements. We don't offer painting ourselves, but we can suggest a door color that fits your house when you order a new door.

**Are estimates really free?**
Yes. We'll come out, measure and give you a written price with no obligation.

**Do you offer financing?**
Yes. Monthly payment options are available on new doors and openers, subject to credit approval. See the financing page or ask during your estimate.

**What's included in a maintenance tune-up?**
Lubrication, spring balance adjustment, a safety reverse and sensor test, and tightening of hinges, brackets and cables. See the residential maintenance page for the full list.

**Which areas do you serve?**
27 cities across the Kansas City metro in Missouri and Kansas, including Blue Springs, Kansas City, Lee's Summit, Independence, Overland Park and Olathe. The service areas page lists them all.

**Do you work on the Kansas side?**
Yes. We serve Kansas City KS, Overland Park, Olathe, Lenexa, Shawnee, Leawood, Mission and Prairie Village.

**What warranty do you give on garage door springs?**
Extension springs usually carry a 3-year warranty. Torsion springs start at a 3-year warranty, and high-cycle torsion springs are available with 5-year, 7-year, 10-year and lifetime warranties. The higher the cycle rating, the longer the coverage. We'll help you pick the right spring for how often you use your door.

**What warranty comes with a new garage door?**
New doors carry the manufacturer's warranty, and we match it with our labor warranty, so the installation is covered as long as the door is.

**Are you licensed and insured?**
Yes. All American Garage Door is licensed and insured.
